Task goals
- Convert a capacity between millilitres and litres in either direction, including to a specified number of decimal places.
- Compare and order a set of capacities given in mixed units (millilitres and litres).
- Solve real-world word problems that require converting a capacity before comparing or working with it, and explain the conversion process.
- Calculate the total capacity of several identical containers, or the number of smaller containers that can be filled from (or make up) a larger volume.
- Solve multi-step word problems that combine addition, subtraction, and unit conversion of capacities expressed in litres, kilolitres, or megalitres.
- Solve rate-based capacity problems, such as a fill or drain rate in litres per minute or kilolitres per hour, to find a time, and determine whether a total capacity is within a stated limit.
Teaching guidance
- Students should know that 1 cm³ = 1 mL and 1000 cm³ = 1000 mL = 1 L.
- Use metric prefixes e.g. milli, centi, kilo, mega.
