Task goals

  • Solve a word problem that multiplies a single item's weight by a quantity to find a total weight, or converts a rate, such as weight per hour or per day, to a total over a given time.
  • Solve a word problem that adds or subtracts weights, including finding a missing weight needed to reach a target total.
  • Convert a weight between kilograms and tonnes, and express a weight using a combination of units, such as kilograms and grams.
  • Solve a multi-step real-world weight problem involving a rate, such as finding the time needed to empty or fill a container given a flow rate in kilograms or tonnes per unit time.
  • Decide whether a given total weight exceeds or is within a stated capacity or limit, such as a vehicle's load limit, justifying the decision with a calculation.

Teaching guidance

  • Use metric prefixes e.g. milli, centi, kilo, mega.
  • Reinforce the unit hierarchy: 1000 g = 1 kg and 1000 kg = 1 t (tonne).
  • Students should be able to choose an appropriate unit (g, kg, t) for a given real-world object and convert between them.
