Task goals
- Read a value from a linear scale, such as a ruler, by identifying the marked interval and counting divisions.
- Read a value from a dial or circular scale by interpreting the pointer's position.
- Work out the value of each unmarked division on a scale from the values of the marked intervals.
- Estimate a value that falls between two marked divisions on a scale.
- Apply scale-reading skills to everyday measuring instruments, including rulers, dials, thermometers, and weighing scales.
Teaching guidance
- Distinguish uniform scales (equal spacing between markings) from non-uniform scales (unequal spacing).
- When a scale is not fully labelled, find the value of each small interval by dividing the gap between two labelled markings by the number of divisions between them.
- Students should be able to read and estimate values between markings on rulers, kitchen scales, measuring jugs, thermometers, and speedometers.
