Spatial patterns (including drawing next pattern and converting to pattern)

Task goals

• Continue a spatial (tile or picture) pattern by drawing the next stage, using the visual structure shown in the given stages.
• Convert a spatial pattern into a number pattern by counting and recording how many tiles are in each stage.
• Describe how a spatial pattern grows from one stage to the next, such as how many tiles are added each time.
• Given only the number pattern for a spatial sequence, find the counts for later stages, or work backwards to find the counts for earlier stages.
• Check whether a stated conversion of a picture pattern into numbers is correct, and identify and correct an error if it is not.
