Interpreting pie charts & pictograms

Interpret a given pie chart or pictogram -- read percentages directly, convert a sector's percentage or a pictogram's icon count into an actual amount using a stated total or key, and (for higher-ability students) calculate or work backwards from a sector's angle using angle = fraction of the data x 360 degrees.

Task goals

  • Read a percentage directly off a pie chart's sectors and convert it into an actual amount using the chart's stated total.
  • Read a pictogram's key and convert an icon count (including a partial icon) into a real quantity, and the reverse.
  • Combine reading a chart with a second calculation step: a difference, a total, or a comparison between categories or rows.
  • Find the total of a raw-count (non-percentage) pie chart before calculating a percentage or angle.
  • Calculate a sector's angle from its percentage or frequency (angle = fraction x 360 degrees), and work backwards from an angle to a percentage or frequency.
