Task goals
- Find a unit fraction of a whole number, e.g. $\dfrac{1}{4}$ of $20$, by dividing by the denominator.
- Find a non-unit fraction of a quantity, e.g. $\dfrac{3}{8}$ of $32$, by dividing by the denominator then multiplying by the numerator.
- Recognise that finding a fraction of a quantity is the same calculation as multiplying the quantity by that fraction.
- Solve a word problem that asks for a fraction of an amount, such as a discount or a share of a class.
- Solve a multi-step problem that finds a fraction of a remaining amount after some has already been used.
- Check whether a calculated fraction of a quantity is a sensible answer, and compare different fractions of the same quantity.
