Task goals

  • Substitute a given value for a single variable into an expression and evaluate it, applying the correct order of operations.
  • Substitute given values for two or more variables into an expression, including expressions with powers, brackets, and fractions.
  • Substitute negative or decimal values into an expression, taking care with signs when squaring or cubing.
  • Check whether a given value is a solution to a simple equation by substituting it in and testing both sides.
  • Substitute values into a real-world formula, such as speed, hire cost, or temperature conversion, and evaluate the result, including when the formula must be rearranged to solve for a different variable.
