Task goals
- Expand a single bracket by multiplying the term outside the bracket by every term inside it, e.g. $2(y+5)$ or $2x(5x+3)$.
- Expand a bracket with a negative term outside it, e.g. $-(2m+7)$, taking care with the signs of every term produced.
- Expand and simplify an expression that combines an expanded bracket with extra terms outside it, e.g. $2(4x+1)+3$.
- Expand two separate brackets and collect like terms to simplify the result, e.g. $-3(x-4)+2(x-2)$.
- Form and expand an expression for the area of a rectangle whose side length is written as a bracket, e.g. length $(x+4)$ and width $3$.
- Check whether an expanded expression is equivalent to the original bracketed expression, including spotting a sign error.
