Task goals

  • Decompose an L-shape or composite shape into rectangles (or a rectangle with a piece removed), and decide whether the addition or subtraction method applies.
  • Find the total area of an L-shape by splitting it into two rectangles and adding their areas (the addition method).
  • Find the area of a rectangle with a smaller rectangular piece removed, by subtracting the missing piece's area from the whole (the subtraction method).
  • Find both the area and the perimeter of a composite shape formed by a rectangle with a square corner removed.
