Task goals

  • Read the vertex (h, k) from a graph and write y = a(x - h)^2 + k with the sign of h flipped inside the bracket and k kept as it is.
  • Substitute the y-intercept or another marked point on the curve (never the vertex) to find the scale factor a.
  • Write the finished vertex-form equation and check it against the graph (opening direction and the marked point).
  • Expand the finished equation to standard form y = ax^2 + bx + c, or find the x-intercepts from it when they are integers.
  • Reason about the sign and size of a, including parabolas with no x-intercepts and parabolas that share the same vertex.
