Terminology

  • SOHCAHTOA
  • auxiliary right triangle
  • compound shape
  • shared measurement
  • semicircle
  • quarter circle
  • stadium
  • kite
  • radius
  • diameter
  • arc length
  • sector
  • exposed perimeter
  • internal join
  • cut-out

Task goals

  • Use sine, cosine, or tangent to derive a shared measurement in a compound shape.
  • Transfer the trig-derived length into a rectangle, trapezium, triangle, circle, stadium, kite, or house component.
  • Decide whether component areas must be added or subtracted.
  • Convert between diameter and radius and combine matching fractional circles.
  • Find exposed perimeter by tracing solid outside edges and excluding internal joins.
  • Construct an auxiliary altitude or diagonal when the required right triangle is hidden.
  • Retain full calculator precision and round only the final result with correct units.
